BRENDA GAEL SMITH, NSW

Designer, exhibition curator and tutor, Brenda Gael Smith creates artwork which is exhibited internationally. Brenda’s textile ‘paintings,’ made from a rich palette of hand-dyed fabrics, are complemented by extensive, textural stitching demonstrating the transformative power of stitch.

Abstraction is a persistent and insistent force. Working improvisationally, Brenda captures the essence of her subjects to impart a sense of wonder for the natural world and a strong affinity to place. Brenda’s teaching focus is on freeform piecing, colour and design fundamentals to promote fun and encourage creative momentum.

In 2025, Brenda received the Rajah Award for her outstanding contribution to Australian quilting.
